By contrast, Cliff insisted that it was nonsense to suggest that a workers’ state could be realised without a workers’ revolution. 60 According to Alex Callinicos, Cliff’s theory of bureaucratic state capitalism afforded his Marxism a number of advantages over orthodox Trotskyism in the post-war period.
The articulation of such a project necessitated at least two elements: first, a model of underlying tendencies which might generate future revolutionary-socialist upheavals and agencies; and, second, a model of socialist practice in the intervening period. Unfortunately, over the next few years, MacIntyre came to conclude that modern capitalism undermined fatally those tendencies which Marx had previously suggested would foster the creation of revolutionarysocialist agencies. First, he rejected Marx’s theory of economic crisis; second, he argued that modern capitalism acted to fragment, rather than unite, workers’ struggles; and, third, he rejected any concept of human nature as a standpoint from which to indict capitalism.
To this end, he did the Left a great service by retrieving the revolutionary kernel of Marx’s theory of history from the deadening grip of Stalinism; and in thus releasing historical materialism from the cage of Stalinist determinism, he laid the basis for an ethical Marxism adequate to the tasks facing socialists in the modern world. In particular, he linked the concepts of class, revolution, and revolutionary party with those of need, want and desire such that his model of a workers’ revolution answered a universal human desire for solidarity.
