Has been the peculiarly uncognitive way in which dream theory has tended to conceptualize its motivational constructs. Unfortunately , this difficulty has been greatest for just that dream theory-Freud's-which otherwise is most cognitive in its assumptions. Freud's motivational theory presents one with a vast array of quasi-physical, quasi-biological concepts: psychic enelgy, libido, instinct, impulse, cathexis and countercathexis, and so on. How can concepts of this ilk be mapped into any space of mental representations?
Logic no longer orders associations, and connections are made between thought elements unrelated by the waking mind. "They are linked by associations of a kind that is scorned by our normal thinking and relegated to the use of jokes. In particular, we find associations based on homonyms and verbal similarities treated as equal in value to the rest" (Freud, 1900, p. 596). It is as if the mind's operations during the entire sleep period are characterized by the conditions characteristic of the kind of silliness or giddiness into which we occasionally fall in the waking state.
From a variety of theoretical perspectives, then, it seems reasonable to conceive the motives or programs guiding the selectivity of human behavior and experience in a verbal/propositional form. For dream theory, this view has immediate advantages. Freud, for example, imagines that unconscious instinctive wishes are the ultimate generators of dream images (see chapter 4). But, so long as the unconscious is viewed as a repository of biological entities, its integration with thought or image justifiably will appear to contemporary cognitivists as exceedingly difficult.
